On Sunday, April 5th, 2026, southerly winds groomed the first signs of a cyclone swell on Australia's Gold Coast, which came as no surprise to our Director of Forecasts, Caden Francis, who predicted the arrival of sand-sucking tubes two weeks in advance.
After receiving the blessing from Snapper Rocks Surfriders Club President, Jay Phillips, we called on Hughie Vaughan, Milla Coco Brown, Lungi Slabb, and Lennix Smith to give away $5K to whichever surfer they deemed the most entertaining.
Sonny gave our Australian panel a single guardrail: only one surfer can walk away with the big yellow check. Easy enough, right?

When Superbank ignites, its two-kilometer track draws a frenzy of wave-frantic groms, World Champions, and the occasional off-course sailboat. This Sunday morning was no exception. To throw another log on the fire, Jay Phillips simultaneously ran practice heats for his local surf club.
With a "Be stylish. Be complete. Be above-the-lip. Do a handstand for God's sake," Jay kicked the 2026 Bum Rush into gear.
Among the crowd, we spotted Southern California's Kirra Pinkerton and Byron Bay's Lehani Zoric, along with surf filmmaker Lachlan McKinnon (known by friends as Peanut), who's been filming Snapper Rocks since he was 14-years-old.
Peanut rallied a few self-proclaimed "old heads" to spread the good word, and while the other regulars got around some schooners at the local Rainbow Bay Surf Club, their offspring battled Lungi for their biggest-ever payday ($5k).
After nearly an hour of party waves, air-attempts, and unforgiving airdrops, our panelists decided on one winner. With a series of forehand jabs that channeled a bygone era, Avoca Beach's Caleb Tancred was unwittingly chaired up the beach. The humble 25-year-old works an architecture job in Byron Bay when he’s not decimating the Superbank.
Caleb will use the $5K to help fund his Challenger Series campaign, after taking nearly six years off for personal reasons. "Over those years there wasn't one person he met who didn't fall in love with him," says his coach, Micro Hall.
We're happy to see some hard hands take home the check.

The 13th installment of the Bum Rush Tour landed in Australia’s “Steel City” (Newcastle) — a blue-collar paradise located 160 kilometers north of Sydney’s central business district. On a windblown day in April, Australia’s premier aerialists plopped themselves on the beach, watched a local session intently, and handed a $5k check to the surfer they liked the best.
