For two reasons, this year’s Bum Rush Tour was unlike any before. First, with surfing’s CEO (Chief Entertainment Officer) and freshly “Sonny” stickered Mason Ho leading the charge, we arrived at one of the most puntable waves on the North Shore. Second, there was $5K and an invitation to a Stab pool party in Japan up for grabs.
On the morning of Super Bowl Sunday, Mason called the impromptu event “on”. Between bites of banana, he rang those closest to him for the pre-show. By 9 am, Burger Nozaki (volume), Vaihiti Mahana (stylist) and Makoa Ho (shared blood) had arrived at our pin.
A little after 9 am, Andy Woodward, a determined and gifted cinematographer, showed up—despite leaning into an all-night celebration of Barron Mamiya’s enormous win in enormous waves at the Pipe Pro the day before.
As the panel sipped coffee, they set the scoring criteria. Like kids at an ice cream truck, their flavor preferences varied. But in one way, they were in complete agreement:

After an hour-long spectacle of broken boards, lost fins, and countless attempts above the lip, Mason crowned local standout Shion Crawford as the winner of our 12th installment of the Bum Rush Tour.

A week prior, Shion broke the internet with a similar pirouette. We can’t wait to see the young Hawaiian do big things in Japan. Never forget: The Bum Rush Tour can be called on anywhere, at any time. Always keep an eye out for the yellow Sonny umbrellas.
Where’s next? Hint: Somewhere Down Unda...

The 13th installment of the Bum Rush Tour landed in Australia’s “Steel City” (Newcastle) — a blue-collar paradise located 160 kilometers north of Sydney’s central business district. On a windblown day in April, Australia’s premier aerialists plopped themselves on the beach, watched a local session intently, and handed a $5k check to the surfer they liked the best.
