There’s a fabled sandbar on the south side of Jax pier in Florida that goes off when the conditions are right. So, after loading up on some coffee and breakfast sandos from Delicomb, we ducked under the pier and headed down the beach to see what the swell dragged in. Dozens of pros were out in the water getting ready for their contest heats, but the waves looked way too fun to let that stop us. With help from Carissa, GiGi, and Kylie, we set up camp. Bum Rush was officially on.
We made the trek down to the land of high performance shortboards and superhuman aerial acrobatics—Lower Trestles. The lineup was peppered with frothing up and commers and pros alike which made it extra tricky for Jack Robinson, Bella Kenworthy, Caity Simmers & Ashton Goggans to pick the Bum Rush champion. But when ‘Yard Sale’ burned super-grom Brody Buck on a critical set wave, it made their decision a little easier.
It was a classic summer day outside when we rolled out of bed and headed down the road to one of our favorite local breaks. Pipes is known for being a mixtape of alternative board riding where nose riders and style masters freely roam. Our full lineup of guest judges including Kaia Howard, Nique Miller, Mele Saili and Andy Davis, narrowed down the local talent to two standouts: ‘Tan Guy’ (aka Anthony) who caught the judge’s eye with his technical maneuvers and ‘Hat Girl’ aka Tyanna, who racked up massive style points, for more than just her hat.
First stop on our 2019 Bum Rush Tour was the Gold Coast, Australia at Duranbah Beach aka D’bah. To kick off this year’s #BumRushTour we had local Aussies @reefheazlewood, @bededurbo, @theflyingsquirrel, @isabella_nichols and @_jayphillips take over to judge the lineup. So, we posted up, blew the horn and 20 minutes later @duke_wrencher “ripped the bag out of it” and won a cheap champagne (sparkling cider actually) shower & $1,000 bucks. Shout out to Kirra Teams Challenge and all those ripping at the ‘real’ comp!
