Browning lotion and tanning oil deliver a golden glow while hydrating and protecting skin – Tanning Collection - Sun Bum
What's an SPF?

The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) on a bottle of sunscreen indicates the level of protection we're getting from the sun's UVB rays—which are the sun rays most commonly responsible for sunburns and skin cancer.

How SPF Is Calculated and Why Does It Matter?

SPF, which stands for Sun Protection Factor, has been used for decades to determine the level of protection someone can expect from the sunscreen they use. It can often vary from person to person given multiple factors such as testing methods and environmental factors. In addition, everyone’s skin is different, which can also affect what kind of SPF is best suited to fit their individual needs.

A common misperception is that the SPF number on a bottle signifies the amount of time you can spend in the sun without getting burned (30 minutes for SPF 30, 50 minutes for SPF 50 etc.) This is not accurate. In fact, the SPF rating system is far more complex and based on the degree to which a certain formula protects against the sun’s harmful UVB rays over a certain period of time. For example, a sunscreen with a rating of SPF 30 allows only 3 photons per 100 to penetrate the skin, meaning it shields approximately 97% of the sun’s harmful UVB rays. This roughly translates to 30 times the protection you’d have versus using no sunscreen at all. This extends to SPF 50 (98% or 50 times the protection) and SPF 70 (98.5% or 70 times the protection). The length of time that a sunscreen will protect you from sunburn will vary based on the UV index at the time as well as other factors.

At Sun Bum, we like to think we make sun care products for everyone. So, whether your SPF preference is 30 or 50, mineral or non-mineral, lotion or spray, you can stay protected from the sun’s harmful rays. As noted by the Skin Cancer Foundation, “The best sunscreen is the one you’ll use.”

How Do Global Standards to Assess SPF Differ?

Global SPF assessment standards have been updated several times over the years, with the most recent update in 2019. The purpose of these updates—which were led by regional regulators and groups such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)—was to reduce the variability of SPF assessments. Currently, even the globally recognized “gold standard” SPF test — the in-vivo test known as SPF ISO-24444 — is subject to considerable variability due to the inherent human biases built into the testing process (Ruvolo, Yousefian,International Journal of Cosmetic Science, Dec. 2025). Because of this, there is an increasing call for governments and regulators to update the testing protocols and standards they recommend for manufacturers to follow — for example, using the HDRS-ISO 23698 test: an in vivo/in vitro hybrid that addresses some of the more subjective factors common with in-vivo only testing. (Ruvolo, Yousefian,International Journal of Cosmetic Science, Dec. 2025).

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 1 in 5 Americans will get skin cancer in their lifetime. We wanna change that.

We've Got Answers

How Do You Choose the Right Tanning Oil?

Not all tanning oils are created equal—some are total game changers, and some… not so much. If you’re on the fair or sensitive side, go for an oil with SPF so you can still get that glow without roasting your skin. If you’re already tan, a lightweight, non-greasy oil will help deepen your color without clogging your pores. For a lasting golden-hour glow, choose one packed with coconut oil, aloe, or vitamin E to keep your skin soft, hydrated, and beautifully sun-kissed. Rule #1: Pick what works for you. Rule #2: Don’t forget the SPF.

Is Tanning Lotion or Oil Better?

Depends on what you’re going for. If you want deep hydration and a slow, even tan, tanning lotion is the way to go—it keeps your skin moisturized, which helps your tan last longer. But if you’re looking to tan faster, tanning oil is designed to boost UV absorption, helping your skin deepen in color more quickly. Just remember, neither replaces sunscreen, so always layer up with SPF to keep your skin happy and healthy.

How is it different from the SPF 15 Tanning Oil?

Our Sunscreen Oil has a higher SPF and contains Coconut Oil, which has extra moisturizing benefits while remaining more lightweight than a traditional tanning oil.

Love this. 2nd year in

"Love this. 2nd year in a row we have used this product"

horrible rash!!!!!

"I am so disappointed. I've used Sun Bum sporadically bc they've sponsored surf comps that my children have competed in. I used this product for 4 days straight a couple of weeks ago at the beach. I broke out in red bumps everywhere that I had used this oil. The rashes have almost cleared up, but I'll never touch this stuff again. I'm just shocked at what it did to my skin!!!"

Tan not worth the Rash and Bumps!!

"I have never had a reaction like this to sunscreen. I wouldn't even label myself as having sensitive skin. I used this on vacation and I broke out with red itchy bumps all over my body. It's been two days and I still have them and my arms are slightly swollen. I don't even have any known allergies, but I could not figure out what was going on. I finally looked up this product and saw I'm not alone in my experience. I usually love sun bum products but now I do not recommend!"

This definitely protects me a

"This definitely protects me a lot. I like to apply everywhere and tan for 20 mins front and back and then apply a stronger sunscreen after that because this is only SPF 15. It works really well, I get a really wonderful tan as a result and it's a bronze-y color and I feel very healthy afterwards."

Horrible rash

"READ THE REVIEWS! I did not see these reviews. I have the worst rash ever (the tiny bumps have bumps!!!) something in the oil made my skin sun sensitive. Ruined my chances of walks on the beach or time in the sun because of the rash gets hit by the sun it gets worse."

So much lighter than cream

"So much lighter than cream sunscreen! 10/10 would repurchase and I recommend. It does leave a residue on your hands but you can just wash it off with soap and water. Also it works to make you more tan!"

Imogen S. (5/5)

Golden Brown!

"As advertised. Protected while bronzed my skin. Will be using this SPF oil on repeat this Summer. Gave 4 out 5 stars for the fragrance. While the coconut, banana fragrance is nostalgic and yummy, it's a bit too much."

CC (4/5)

BEWARE OF ALMOND OIL!

"It’s shocking that this company doesn’t very clearly disclose that this product contains ALMOND oil which is a major allergen for people with tree nut allergies. It is outrageous that consumers are expected to comb through the ingredient lists to avoid serious health risks as it’s unusual for almond oil to be in these products. I broke out in itchy red rashes all over my body that have only gotten worse 4 days later, even after taking Benadryl and scrubbing the product off as soon as I realized what was in it. Would not recommend."

what’s the difference between the tanning oil and the browning lotions? what are the results of each product?
Hi there! Both accelerate your tan so you spend less time in the sun - it just depends on if you prefer an oil application or a lotion! Hope this helps :)
Is this safe to use on my face as well?
