What's an SPF?

The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) on a bottle of sunscreen indicates the level of protection we're getting from the sun's UVB rays—which are the sun rays most commonly responsible for sunburns and skin cancer.

How SPF Is Calculated and Why Does It Matter?

SPF, which stands for Sun Protection Factor, has been used for decades to determine the level of protection someone can expect from the sunscreen they use. It can often vary from person to person given multiple factors such as testing methods and environmental factors. In addition, everyone’s skin is different, which can also affect what kind of SPF is best suited to fit their individual needs.

A common misperception is that the SPF number on a bottle signifies the amount of time you can spend in the sun without getting burned (30 minutes for SPF 30, 50 minutes for SPF 50 etc.) This is not accurate. In fact, the SPF rating system is far more complex and based on the degree to which a certain formula protects against the sun’s harmful UVB rays over a certain period of time. For example, a sunscreen with a rating of SPF 30 allows only 3 photons per 100 to penetrate the skin, meaning it shields approximately 97% of the sun’s harmful UVB rays. This roughly translates to 30 times the protection you’d have versus using no sunscreen at all. This extends to SPF 50 (98% or 50 times the protection) and SPF 70 (98.5% or 70 times the protection). The length of time that a sunscreen will protect you from sunburn will vary based on the UV index at the time as well as other factors.

At Sun Bum, we like to think we make sun care products for everyone. So, whether your SPF preference is 30 or 50, mineral or non-mineral, lotion or spray, you can stay protected from the sun’s harmful rays. As noted by the Skin Cancer Foundation, “The best sunscreen is the one you’ll use.”

How Do Global Standards to Assess SPF Differ?

Global SPF assessment standards have been updated several times over the years, with the most recent update in 2019. The purpose of these updates—which were led by regional regulators and groups such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)—was to reduce the variability of SPF assessments. Currently, even the globally recognized “gold standard” SPF test — the in-vivo test known as SPF ISO-24444 — is subject to considerable variability due to the inherent human biases built into the testing process (Ruvolo, Yousefian,International Journal of Cosmetic Science, Dec. 2025). Because of this, there is an increasing call for governments and regulators to update the testing protocols and standards they recommend for manufacturers to follow — for example, using the HDRS-ISO 23698 test: an in vivo/in vitro hybrid that addresses some of the more subjective factors common with in-vivo only testing. (Ruvolo, Yousefian,International Journal of Cosmetic Science, Dec. 2025).

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 1 in 5 Americans will get skin cancer in their lifetime. We wanna change that.

We've Got Answers

Does It Matter What Face Sunscreen You Use?

Yes, it does. Not all sunscreens are created equal, and your face deserves the best. A good face sunscreen should be lightweight, offer broad-spectrum SPF, and be free of harsh chemicals. It’s all about finding one that protects your skin without feeling heavy or sticky—because your skin deserves protection that works and feels great.

Is It Okay to Put Sunscreen on Your Face Every day?

Absolutely. Daily sunscreen is one of the best ways to care for your skin. It helps protect against sun damage, slows down signs of aging like wrinkles and dark spots, and keeps your face looking and feeling fresh. Our lightweight, non-greasy formula makes it easy to incorporate sunscreen into your morning routine—no hassle, just healthy skin.

How Often Should You Apply Sunscreen Lotion?

Every 80 minutes is the sweet spot. Sunscreen breaks down over time (especially if you're swimming, sweating, or drying off), so reapplying every two hours keeps your skin protected and happy. Keep a bottle nearby—beach bag, car, backpack, whatever—so you can take your skincare and suncare to-go. Your skin will thank you.

Which Is Better, Sunscreen Lotion or Cream?

It depends on what your skin’s into. Sunscreen lotion is usually lighter, so it spreads easier and feels less sticky—great for everyday use or when you're on the go. Creams are thicker and more moisturizing, which makes them a solid pick for dry or sensitive skin. Both get the job done, so it really comes down to how your skin vibes with the texture.

Good stuff

"Being older, I need better skin protection and Sun Bum does a good job. Goes on easy and is absorbed quickly. Also, since it's made for the face, I don't get any burning of the eyes or bad taste if I inadvertently get it in my mouth."

Grant A. (5/5)

My new go-to face sunscreen.

"My new go-to face sunscreen. It has never failed me and I love the feel of it! Also does not run into my eyes which I had problems with other sunscreens"

Heather C. (5/5)

No acne causing ingredients in the 70

"I have extremely sensitive skin and I have to closely research product ingredients I put on my face. I wear sunscreen everyday under my makeup. I wanted to try the 70 because it doesn’t have any acne causing ingredients like the 50 version. It’s SO hard to find face products with no acne causing ingredients! The consistency of the 70 is much thicker and stickier than the 50, which I don’t love. I really loved the 50, but it was causing minor breakouts, mainly on my nose, and I learned it contains a few acne causing ingredients."

Amy O. (4/5)

My favorite sunscreen

"Honestly, this is SUCH a good sunscreen. It doesn't burn my eye even when I put it on my eyelids, and its not greasy or heavy at all even as an oily skinned person. And absolutely NO whitecast. Love it so much."

Watch your Eyes!

"I bought this recently for a Caribbean cruise and boy was THAT a mistake. My husband got this in his eye (sweat dripped from his forehead into his eye). His eyes were red and burned for SEVERAL days after that. No amount of flushing them or eye drops helped. If you read the Amazon reviews on this product, you'll see that this is not an isolated incident."

Kelly K. (1/5)

Smooth and creamy, this lightweight

"Smooth and creamy, this lightweight heavyweight is not drying to my very dry skin. It glides on and is absorbed quickly - no white streaks! This is my first time using Sun Bum on my face, and I am sold."

Lara B. (5/5)

Simply the best in sunscreen

"Simply the best sunscreen available. I have Lupus and cannot get sun exposure or I will have a flare-up. I require an SPF 70. After trying numerous sunscreens that are so called “dermatologist recommended”, but they all either didn’t absorb in or after hours of wear caused my eyes to water/burn and gave me a headache, due to chemicals I presume. Sum Bum 70 for Face is all I buy. It is the only one that works and does not have a weird smell or hidden dangerous chemicals which made my eyes burn. Truly, I’m so thankful for Sunbum! I can be in the sun again."

Please Don't Ever Discontinue this Sunscreen!

"I've tried many sunscreens over many years, and Sun Bum Face 70 is the best and most consistently performing one of all. It's the only sunscreen I've used that can be set with face powder without flaking or clumping; And, once it's set, it won't run or irritate my eyes. I've been having a hard time finding bottles of it in stores lately, so I thought I'd put my word in. Please, please, don't discontinue this perfect product!"

Q&A

Does this work well under makeup?? I always have problems with pilling with my sunscreens
Hi Ruby, thanks so much for reaching out! If you are looking for an SPF protecting base, we would recommend checking out our Mineral Face sunscreens here: https://www.sunbum.com/collections/mineral-sunscreen?filters=suntype-face Or our Daily Sunscreen Moisturizer. Have dry skin looking for moisturizing face sunscreen
Hi Jill, thanks for reaching out about this! All of our OG sunscreens have moisturizing formulas. However if you are looking for a dewy finish, we would recommend checking out our Glow 30 Sunscreen or our Daily Sunscreen Moisturizer with SPF 30 :) If you have any additional questions, send us an email on our contact page and we'll get back to ya ASAP! xo, SB
Is this a mineral or chemical sunscreen? Also should I apply this product before or after my moisturizer?
Hi Mari-Jayne, thanks so much for reaching out! Our Face 70 is a chemical sunscreen. We would recommend applying your sunscreen after applying your moisturizer to ensure optimal protection. Hope this helps and feel free to reach out to us through your contact page if you have any other questions! xo, SB
Does it sting the eyes like the Sun Bum Face 50 does? When I applied it I purposely stopped at the orbital bone but when I went for a short bike ride my eyes started to burn. Wondering if the Face 70 is formulated any differently to prevent this? I would think if a product is intentionally marketed for the face it would be gentle on the eyes.
Hi Julie, thanks so much for reaching out. Due to the fact that our Face 70 is a chemical sunscreen product, we do recommend that you avoid contact with eyes. We do know that it's absolutely the worst when sunscreen gets in your eyes. Some tricks that we use to avoid this is to try a non-chemical sunscreen such as our Mineral line or using our sweat resistant Signature line. Hope this helps! xo, SB
