More About This Product

Why We Made This

An easy to apply, continuous spray mineral based active sunscreen that’s Fragrance Free and provides Broad Spectrum SPF 50 protection to help protect skin from UVA/UVB rays.

Did you know? None of our sunscreen sprays include chemical propellants; they opt for compression over aerosol! The air dispenses the product stored in a B.O.V (Bag on Valve) inside the container, steering clear of traditional aerosol methods.

What's an SPF?

The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) on a bottle of sunscreen indicates the level of protection we're getting from the sun's UVB rays—which are the sun rays most commonly responsible for sunburns and skin cancer.

How SPF Is Calculated and Why Does It Matter?

SPF, which stands for Sun Protection Factor, has been used for decades to determine the level of protection someone can expect from the sunscreen they use. It can often vary from person to person given multiple factors such as testing methods and environmental factors. In addition, everyone’s skin is different, which can also affect what kind of SPF is best suited to fit their individual needs.

A common misperception is that the SPF number on a bottle signifies the amount of time you can spend in the sun without getting burned (30 minutes for SPF 30, 50 minutes for SPF 50 etc.) This is not accurate. In fact, the SPF rating system is far more complex and based on the degree to which a certain formula protects against the sun’s harmful UVB rays over a certain period of time. For example, a sunscreen with a rating of SPF 30 allows only 3 photons per 100 to penetrate the skin, meaning it shields approximately 97% of the sun’s harmful UVB rays. This roughly translates to 30 times the protection you’d have versus using no sunscreen at all. This extends to SPF 50 (98% or 50 times the protection) and SPF 70 (98.5% or 70 times the protection). The length of time that a sunscreen will protect you from sunburn will vary based on the UV index at the time as well as other factors.

At Sun Bum, we like to think we make sun care products for everyone. So, whether your SPF preference is 30 or 50, mineral or non-mineral, lotion or spray, you can stay protected from the sun’s harmful rays. As noted by the Skin Cancer Foundation, “The best sunscreen is the one you’ll use.”

How Do Global Standards to Assess SPF Differ?

Global SPF assessment standards have been updated several times over the years, with the most recent update in 2019. The purpose of these updates—which were led by regional regulators and groups such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)—was to reduce the variability of SPF assessments. Currently, even the globally recognized “gold standard” SPF test — the in-vivo test known as SPF ISO-24444 — is subject to considerable variability due to the inherent human biases built into the testing process (Ruvolo, Yousefian,International Journal of Cosmetic Science, Dec. 2025). Because of this, there is an increasing call for governments and regulators to update the testing protocols and standards they recommend for manufacturers to follow — for example, using the HDRS-ISO 23698 test: an in vivo/in vitro hybrid that addresses some of the more subjective factors common with in-vivo only testing. (Ruvolo, Yousefian,International Journal of Cosmetic Science, Dec. 2025).

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 1 in 5 Americans will get skin cancer in their lifetime. We wanna change that.

We've Got Answers

What is hazmat? Why can't it be shipped to Hawaii, Alaska, or a PO Box?

Some of our products (made with compressed air or containing alcohol) are regulated as hazardous materials (i.e. “Hazmat”) when shipping. You don’t need to worry about what’s inside the products—those are made with good stuff.

Does Mineral Sunscreen Clog Pores?

Nope! Mineral sunscreen sits on your skin instead of soaking into it, which means it won’t clog your pores or make you break out. In fact, zinc oxide (one of the main ingredients) is actually pretty rad for acne-prone skin—it helps calm inflammation and redness. So whether you’ve got sensitive skin or just don’t want to risk waking up with a surprise breakout, mineral sunscreen’s got your back.

Can You Still Tan With Mineral Sunscreen?

Yep, kinda. Mineral sunscreen blocks most of the UV rays that burn your skin, but a little bit of UVA still gets through, which means you might get a slight tan over time. But here’s the thing—tanning is still sun damage, even if it looks good in the moment. If you love that sun-kissed glow, keep in mind that it can also lead to wrinkles and sun spots over time.Play it smart, wear your sunscreen, and maybe just go for a bronzer instead.

Do not buy

"Had to purchase at a resort since I ran out of sunblock that I brought. This product is awful. Spray does not rub in. Goes on thick and white. Had a hard time washing it off. I had to scrub with a wash rag to get it off. Would like to get a refund from the manufacturer if possible."

Terrible allergic reaction!!

"I sprayed the sunscreen onto my hand and quickly applied it to my face and arms, and just moments later all my areas turned into one giant hive. I have long used other brands of mineral sunscreens with no trouble at all, and did not see anything on the ingredients list that stood out to me. The reaction was so severe that it ruined the next four days for me as I went back and forth between Benadryl and steroids to calm the reaction. If you’re sensitive, beware."

Q&A

How is this for use on the scalp of people with hair?
Hey Rachel, thanks for reaching out! You can totally use this product on your scalp, with or without hair. That said, when it comes to our Mineral Line, the active ingredient is zinc which can cause a white hue due to zinc being white in nature. If you would like a transparent product specifically made for your head, we do have a Scalp & Hair Mist SPF 30 :) xo, SB
Is this spray non-aerosol?
Hey Ashley, thanks for reaching out! As of now most all of our packaging is recyclable, including many of our bottles, tubes, and spray cans which are pressurized, not aerosol. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to us on our contact page. xo, SB
does it go on clear or white
Hi Carolyn, thanks so much for reaching out! When it comes to our Mineral Line, the active ingredient is zinc which can sometimes cause a whitish hue, especially due to the fact that zinc is white in nature. If you’d like some more information about our Mineral Line or any of our other products, we'd love to hear from you! Shoot us an email through our website's contact page, and we'll be sure to get back to ya ASAP :) xo, SB
Is this safe to use during first trimester of pregnancy? Thanks!
Hi Zoe, Thank you for your inquiry regarding use of our products while pregnant!! What I do know is that it’s super important to wear sun protection whenever you’re going to be exposed to the sun. As a non-medical professional, what I don’t know are the intricacies of the hormonal balance in your body and your particular skin type and how it may respond to any product you may choose to utilize while you’re pregnant. My recommendation would be to talk to your OB-Gyn and/or dermatologist to be sure that you’re getting the protection you need and that will be safe for you and your baby. xo, Sun Bum
can you use this on your face? I know there is more facial sunscreens from this line but I am loving to convenience of the spray. Been searching for a type of facial mist to apply on top of makeup or even repeatedly on a day outside on the beach or lake. Lotion seems a bit too much sometimes
Hey Rachel! Yes, you can use this on your face! We would also recommend our Original SPF 45 Sunscreen Face Mist which is also super convenient! It works best if you spray the container liberally into palm and apply evenly to face and neck 15 minutes before sun exposure. xo, Sun Bum
