Mineral vs Non-Mineral Sunscreen

Both mineral and non-mineral sunscreen offer Broad Spectrum protection. So, what’s the difference between these two sunscreen types?

We've Got Answers

Can You Put Moisturizer Over Mineral Sunscreen?

Moisturizer goesfirst, sunscreen goes last. Think of mineral sunscreen like a force field—it needs to sit on top of your skin to do its job. If you slather on moisturizer afterward, you’re messing with the shield and making it less effective. So hydrate first, let it soak in, then lock it all down with your sunscreen. Boom. Sun-protected, hydrated, and ready to roll.

Does Mineral Sunscreen Clog Pores?

Nope! Mineral sunscreen sits on your skin instead of soaking into it, which means it won’t clog your pores or make you break out. In fact, zinc oxide (one of the main ingredients) is actually pretty rad for acne-prone skin—it helps calm inflammation and redness. So whether you’ve got sensitive skin or just don’t want to risk waking up with a surprise breakout, mineral sunscreen’s got your back.

Can You Still Tan With Mineral Sunscreen?

Yep, kinda. Mineral sunscreen blocks most of the UV rays that burn your skin, but a little bit of UVA still gets through, which means you might get a slight tan over time. But here’s the thing—tanning is still sun damage, even if it looks good in the moment. If you love that sun-kissed glow, keep in mind that it can also lead to wrinkles and sun spots over time.Play it smart, wear your sunscreen, and maybe just go for a bronzer instead.

Reviews

Sun Bummer

"I don't like the new formula, it is oily and does not protect as well in the water. I also dislike your ai customer disservice function."

Another great Sun Bum product

"This face stick goes on easily, is a high SPF, and is available in a mineral formula. It comes in a tiny tube, but lasts a long time."

Donna C. (5/5)

Quality product

"Truly goes on light, did not irritate my skin and held up all day."

Sarah G. (5/5)

Phenomenal sunscreen

"Smells great, lathers well and provides good coverage. The size is perfect, I keep it in a pocket in my ski jacket at all times."

Lydia D. (5/5)

4 hours of sun, no burn!

"Love it! Applied then immediately surfed for 3-4 hours in sunny conditions and did not get burned. Great coverage. I can barely smell it, but it would be nice if there was a smell to be honest. It does not make your skin feel greasy or gross, but gives it a slightly tactile feel that makes you feel like this stuff isn’t coming off no matter how hard you play."

Christian C. (5/5)

This is absolutely amazing. Easy

"This is absolutely amazing. Easy to apply, stays on, and the skin remains dry and protected. Good size to travel with and there are no tears with this products. This is a product to continue to purchase."

Rodrigo T. (5/5)

Best sunscreen for not dripping

"Best sunscreen for not dripping into my eyes when I’m surfing"

Mineral SPF 50 Sunscreen Face Stick - easy to use

"I really prefer Sun Bum's SPF 50 Face Stick over their newest competitor (Freaks of Nature) because the "stick" is so much easier to apply and it fits well and lies flat within pockets. The other brand, while they have the right intent, has their version of a "stick" as a round cylinder and it also has an unpleasant smell which I think is coming from their plastic. Sun Bum forever!"

This is my single favorite

"This is my single favorite sun bum product, this covers so well and so easily, I will be buying more once I get back from Hawaii."

Hi, does this expire or no?

Can I use this on my body?
Hi Sandy, thanks for reaching out! You sure can :) xo, SB
The stick has tiny bead looking things in the stick and this causes streaks when applying on my face. Is that normal?
Hey Alie! Thanks so much for providing us with your feedback. We are so sorry to hear that you had this issue with your product. We would love to help you. If you have a sec, send us an email on our contact page and we'll get back to ya ASAP! xo, SB
What’s the difference between this one and the baby bum stick?
Hey Katherine! Thanks for reaching out to us about this :) Although the ingredient lists are similar, the percentages of the ingredients used are slightly different, making the Baby Bum Mineral Lotion more suitable for babies, as they tend to have the most sensitive skin. Plus, it’s pediatrician tested! However, they are pretty similar, so it's really up to you what you prefer! If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to reach out. xo, SB
