What's an SPF?

The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) on a bottle of sunscreen indicates the level of protection we're getting from the sun's UVB rays—which are the sun rays most commonly responsible for sunburns and skin cancer.

How SPF Is Calculated and Why Does It Matter?

SPF, which stands for Sun Protection Factor, has been used for decades to determine the level of protection someone can expect from the sunscreen they use. It can often vary from person to person given multiple factors such as testing methods and environmental factors. In addition, everyone’s skin is different, which can also affect what kind of SPF is best suited to fit their individual needs.

A common misperception is that the SPF number on a bottle signifies the amount of time you can spend in the sun without getting burned (30 minutes for SPF 30, 50 minutes for SPF 50 etc.) This is not accurate. In fact, the SPF rating system is far more complex and based on the degree to which a certain formula protects against the sun’s harmful UVB rays over a certain period of time. For example, a sunscreen with a rating of SPF 30 allows only 3 photons per 100 to penetrate the skin, meaning it shields approximately 97% of the sun’s harmful UVB rays. This roughly translates to 30 times the protection you’d have versus using no sunscreen at all. This extends to SPF 50 (98% or 50 times the protection) and SPF 70 (98.5% or 70 times the protection). The length of time that a sunscreen will protect you from sunburn will vary based on the UV index at the time as well as other factors.

At Sun Bum, we like to think we make sun care products for everyone. So, whether your SPF preference is 30 or 50, mineral or non-mineral, lotion or spray, you can stay protected from the sun’s harmful rays. As noted by the Skin Cancer Foundation, “The best sunscreen is the one you’ll use.”

How Do Global Standards to Assess SPF Differ?

Global SPF assessment standards have been updated several times over the years, with the most recent update in 2019. The purpose of these updates—which were led by regional regulators and groups such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)—was to reduce the variability of SPF assessments. Currently, even the globally recognized “gold standard” SPF test — the in-vivo test known as SPF ISO-24444 — is subject to considerable variability due to the inherent human biases built into the testing process (Ruvolo, Yousefian,International Journal of Cosmetic Science, Dec. 2025). Because of this, there is an increasing call for governments and regulators to update the testing protocols and standards they recommend for manufacturers to follow — for example, using the HDRS-ISO 23698 test: an in vivo/in vitro hybrid that addresses some of the more subjective factors common with in-vivo only testing. (Ruvolo, Yousefian,International Journal of Cosmetic Science, Dec. 2025).

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 1 in 5 Americans will get skin cancer in their lifetime. We wanna change that.

We've Got Answers

What is hazmat? Why can't it be shipped to Hawaii, Alaska, or a PO Box?

Some of our products (made with compressed air or containing alcohol) are regulated as hazardous materials (i.e. “Hazmat”) when shipping. You don’t need to worry about what’s inside the products—those are made with good stuff.

Does Mineral Sunscreen Clog Pores?

Nope! Mineral sunscreen sits on your skin instead of soaking into it, which means it won’t clog your pores or make you break out. In fact, zinc oxide (one of the main ingredients) is actually pretty rad for acne-prone skin—it helps calm inflammation and redness. So whether you’ve got sensitive skin or just don’t want to risk waking up with a surprise breakout, mineral sunscreen’s got your back.

Can You Still Tan With Mineral Sunscreen?

Yep, kinda. Mineral sunscreen blocks most of the UV rays that burn your skin, but a little bit of UVA still gets through, which means you might get a slight tan over time. But here’s the thing—tanning is still sun damage, even if it looks good in the moment. If you love that sun-kissed glow, keep in mind that it can also lead to wrinkles and sun spots over time.Play it smart, wear your sunscreen, and maybe just go for a bronzer instead.

Horrible

"Absolutely horrible. It’s very thick and white and you look like a ghost on the beach. Even after a full day at the beach, swimming for hours and taking 2 showers at night it doesn’t come of. We had to throw it away. Waste of money!!"

Priscilla (1/5)

garbage product

"this stuff is garbage, sprays on like whitewash, streaks and you look like an idiot on the beach, had to go shower scrub it off and buy something at the resort that was usable"

rob s. (1/5)

Great as a substitute for foundation!

"I absolutely LOVE applying this product to my face in the summer and then applying bronzer, blush, etc over the top. (I spray onto my hands and then apply to my face, neck, ears, etc.) Yes… there is a slight white residue which is expected with a mineral sunscreen. I find that it fades after rubbing in and is completely not noticeable once bronzer and blush is applied. I’ve received so many compliments on my skin and I’m very fair and over 50. I also love the scent!"

Dana D. (5/5)

Best spray sunscreen ever!

"Best spray sunscreen ever!"

Amy E. (5/5)

Holy cow!

"This ginger is having success with this product!! Fully tested today, lasts up to 5 hours before burning ensues! I would've had to reapply sunscreen at least 8x in that time frame. I used the 30 htw, planning to try the 70 next Yes, there's a white residue, it's sprayable zinc oxide. Light spray does the trick, too much and it'll take 5 days to clean off your skin. But oh so worth it for this ginger!!!"

Richelle (5/5)

Does not work

"Would give a zero if I could. I’m a lifelong sunbum fan, but this product did not work for me whatsoever. Applied and reapplied but ended up burnt to an absolute crisp after about 3 hours."

Q&A

Is the mineral spray Safe for 6 months and older?
Hi Kristie, thanks so much for reaching out! As you probably already know, a baby’s skin is 10x more sensitive than ours and because the skin’s natural barrier function is still developing in babies and kids, they are more vulnerable to environmental exposure. That’s why we recommend using our plant-based sunscreens on babies 6 months or older. Babies any younger really shouldn’t be exposed to the sun at all. We know it’s super tempting and tough to manage sometimes, but it’s the responsible thing to do. As for the rest of our Baby Bum Line, our products are plant-based and are formulated to be gentle enough for newborn skin. You can check out our full product line here. However, if your little one has extra sensitive skin, make sure to consult your doctor first. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to us on our contact page. xo, SB
The white spray can of Mineral 30 spray that makes everything white- how do you wash it off of humans, boats, the deck, a fabric couch ??? - this stuff has gone from one kid to spreading across everything. Please tell me there’s a way to wash this stuff off!?!
Hi Doug, thanks so much for reaching out! Here are some tips we use to remove rogue Mineral Sunscreen: 1. Scrape up the excess sunscreen with a spoon or dull knife. 2. Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch on the surface to absorb the oily residue. 3. After 15 minutes, vacuum the powder up. 4. Apply a cleaning solution such as dish soap, laundry detergent, or stain remover to the area. Hope this helps!! If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out :)
Does the Sun Bum Mineral SPF 30 spray come in travel sizes. What would the cost be per item? I would need approximately 70 of them for wedding welcome bags.
Hi Silvana, stoked to hear from ya! Thanks for thinking of us on your big day :) Our spray sunscreens don't come in travel sizes, but we do have our sunscreen lotions available in 3oz tubes! If you have any additional questions, send us an email on our contact page and we'll get back to ya ASAP! xo, SB
Hi! Can this product be used on the face? Also, is it transparent and can be used over make up?
Hi Maggie, stoked to hear from ya! You can totally use the Mineral SPF 30 Sunscreen Spray on your face! We recommend that you spray it on your hands first and pat it onto your skin to avoid contact with eyes and to ensure even distribution. However, if you would like to spray the sunscreen directly onto your face you totally can! You will just want to avoid your eyes when applying! A little goes a long way, so just be careful with how much you apply! The Mineral spray is a zinc product, so it will be white and you might need to rub it in quite a bit! We would also recommend applying it before applying makeup to get the most protection! Hope this helps! If you have any other questions, feel free to send us a message at hey@sunbum.com! xo, SB
Hi! does this bottle use aerosol?
Hi there! Our spray bottles use a technology that uses compressed air inside of the bottle to release product that is stored inside a bag inside the bottle, so we do not use aerosol. Hope this helps <3 If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to reach out to us! xo, SB
