Why We Made This

Our Kids SPF 50 Clear Sunscreen Spray features a clear, water-resistant kids sunscreen formula that can be applied to wet or dry skin to keep up with our most active kids.

How To Use

Shake well before use. Hold container 4 to 6 inches from the skin to apply. Spray liberally and spread evenly by hand 15 minutes before sun exposure. Do not spray directly into face. Spray on hands then apply to face. Do not apply in windy conditions. Use in well-ventilated area. Reapply: after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating. Immediately after towel drying. At least every 2 hours. Children under 6 months of age: ask a doctor.

Sonny's Tip

Because this kids sunscreen is clear, it may be easy to miss some spots (and no one wants to burn). Make sure you (or your kiddo) apply this liberally and evenly onto skin. If applied to wet skin, just make sure to let sunscreen absorb completely (about 15 min) before heading back out into the water/sun.

What's an SPF?

The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) on a bottle of sunscreen indicates the level of protection we're getting from the sun's UVB rays—which are the sun rays most commonly responsible for sunburns and skin cancer.

How SPF Is Calculated and Why Does It Matter?

SPF, which stands for Sun Protection Factor, has been used for decades to determine the level of protection someone can expect from the sunscreen they use. It can often vary from person to person given multiple factors such as testing methods and environmental factors. In addition, everyone’s skin is different, which can also affect what kind of SPF is best suited to fit their individual needs.

A common misperception is that the SPF number on a bottle signifies the amount of time you can spend in the sun without getting burned (30 minutes for SPF 30, 50 minutes for SPF 50 etc.) This is not accurate. In fact, the SPF rating system is far more complex and based on the degree to which a certain formula protects against the sun’s harmful UVB rays over a certain period of time. For example, a sunscreen with a rating of SPF 30 allows only 3 photons per 100 to penetrate the skin, meaning it shields approximately 97% of the sun’s harmful UVB rays. This roughly translates to 30 times the protection you’d have versus using no sunscreen at all. This extends to SPF 50 (98% or 50 times the protection) and SPF 70 (98.5% or 70 times the protection). The length of time that a sunscreen will protect you from sunburn will vary based on the UV index at the time as well as other factors.

At Sun Bum, we like to think we make sun care products for everyone. So, whether your SPF preference is 30 or 50, mineral or non-mineral, lotion or spray, you can stay protected from the sun’s harmful rays. As noted by the Skin Cancer Foundation, “The best sunscreen is the one you’ll use.”

How Do Global Standards to Assess SPF Differ?

Global SPF assessment standards have been updated several times over the years, with the most recent update in 2019. The purpose of these updates—which were led by regional regulators and groups such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)—was to reduce the variability of SPF assessments. Currently, even the globally recognized “gold standard” SPF test — the in-vivo test known as SPF ISO-24444 — is subject to considerable variability due to the inherent human biases built into the testing process (Ruvolo, Yousefian,International Journal of Cosmetic Science, Dec. 2025). Because of this, there is an increasing call for governments and regulators to update the testing protocols and standards they recommend for manufacturers to follow — for example, using the HDRS-ISO 23698 test: an in vivo/in vitro hybrid that addresses some of the more subjective factors common with in-vivo only testing. (Ruvolo, Yousefian,International Journal of Cosmetic Science, Dec. 2025).

Did you know that oftentimes, the skin cancers we get as adults are results from the burns we got as kids?

We've Got Answers

So, what makes the Kids sunscreen formula special and how’s it different from the other stuff you guys make?

Our Kids sunscreen line is made with our most active kids in mind. It’s got a clear, water-resistant formula that’s made to apply easily (and absorb quickly) to both wet and dry skin. So kids can back to doing what they do best. Just make sure to let sunscreen absorb completely (about 15 min) before heading back out into the water/sun.

About how old should they be to start using Kids sunscreen?

They can start graduating from Baby products to KIDS sunscreen around age 5.

Ok, now the important question: Does it smell good?

Smells kinda like a candy shop. Haha no, but seriously, our kids are obsessed. And it’s made without using synthetic fragrances, which is good too.

Can Kids sunscreen be applied directly to their faces?

Our Kids Clear Lotion and Face Stick can be applied directly to the face, but when using the Spray, just make sure to apply it to hands first before putting on the face.

What does the Dermatologist have to say about this stuff?

Our Kids sunscreen has been Dermatologist tested and approved. In other words, they gave us a thumbs up.

My kid is allergic to nuts and is also ‘Gluten Free’ (which makes birthday parties super fun). Is this sunscreen safe for them to use?

All of our Kids products are gluten-free. Outside of Coconuts, Kukui Nuts, and Argan oil, which some consider to be tree nuts, we don’t put nuts in any of ourproducts. But we can’t guarantee zero traces as we don’t currently have a program in place to certify our manufacturing facilities as nut-free. For severe allergies, please consult your doctor before you try any of our stuff.

What is hazmat? Why can't it be shipped to Hawaii, Alaska, or a PO Box?

Some of our products (made with compressed air or containing alcohol) are regulated as hazardous materials (i.e. “Hazmat”) when shipping. You don’t need to worry about what’s inside the products—those are made with good stuff.

scent is terrible

"The smell is awful and stays on your skin. I picked this up at the drug store not realizing it was intended only for young kids who want to smell like bubble gum marshmallow. It will end up in the trash. Product should be labeled to give warning of the unusual scent."

Q&A

Hello, Can you tell me what the difference is between the sun bum mineral line and the baby bum mineral line? I'm struggling to find information available about that. Thank you, Chantel
Hey there! Thanks for reaching out to us about this. Although the ingredient lists are similar, the percentages of the ingredients used are slightly different, making the Baby Bum Mineral Lotion more suitable for babies, as they tend to have the most sensitive skin. Plus, it’s pediatrician tested! However, they are pretty similar, so it's really up to you what you prefer! If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to reach out. :) xo, SB
From what age can the spray be used?
Hi Ina, thanks so much for reaching out! We recommend graduating from Baby Bum products to KIDS sunscreen around age 5. :) xo, SB
Does this product contain any tree nut oils? I seem to be getting conflicting info online…My daughter is allergic to cashews and pistachios.
Hi Jess, thanks so much for reaching out. This product is formulated without tree nut oils, however, we would love to hear about the conflicting info that you mentioned above. Would you mind reaching out to us at hey@sunbum.com so we can help you? xo, SB
hey so your spray sunscreens are usually sticky, is this one sticky?
Hi Salem, thanks so much for reaching out. We don't think this product is really all that sticky, but you might want to try it to find out :) xo, SB
